How We Research
Updated: 2 Nov 2026
Hammerlyn is a research-only site. We do not buy, unbox or run our own product tests on the tools and home improvement gear we write about, and we never claim that we did. Here is exactly what we do instead.
Where our information comes from
We start with the manufacturer's own product page, spec sheet and printed manual whenever one is available. That gives us the measurements that matter for a tool: voltage, chuck size, torque, sensor type, scan depth, tank capacity, weight and similar figures the maker states first, not a number we estimate.
We then confirm the exact model is still sold on Amazon US. If a model has been discontinued or replaced, we note that in the text and swap to the current equivalent rather than recommend something you can no longer buy.
How we read owner reviews
We read a wide spread of verified owner reviews on Amazon, on the maker's own site, and in buyer forums and discussion threads. We are looking for patterns that repeat across many different owners, not a single five-star or one-star post. When several owners independently mention the same strength or the same limitation, such as a stud finder struggling on plaster and lath, or a tool box latch wearing out early, we summarise that pattern in our own words.
We never copy Amazon review text, and we never state or imply a star rating in our own writing or in the page's structured data.
How we show price
We do not print dollar prices. Amazon prices change often and we do not have a live price feed. Each pick shows a price tier instead of a dollar figure: Budget, Mid-range or Premium. The tier compares the maker list price on our check date with similar products in the same category, and the Check current price on Amazon link shows today's price. Always confirm the current price on the Amazon listing before you buy.
How we choose what to compare
For a buying guide, we shortlist models that fit the stated use case (plaster walls, homeowner-grade drilling, a crowded one-car garage, and so on), then compare them on the same criteria side by side: core specs, build quality signals from the spec sheet, battery or power source, included accessories, and owner-review themes. We note a real, specific drawback for every pick, not a vague one.
When we update a guide
We re-check listings and prices on a regular schedule, and sooner if we learn a model has been discontinued, replaced or recalled. Every page shows a "Last verified" date, and any meaningful change to a pick or a price is noted in that page's change log.
Corrections
If you spot a factual error, an outdated model number, or a price that has moved, tell us through the contact page. We correct the page and record the correction in its change log.
